What's old is new

This is my place to show off the items I would call vintage, things I have either refinished or kept as is and find interesting. I am still a kid at heart bringing home what some might call junk and am always in search of that buried treasure. I am not a picker and I am not a hoarder, working with my hands on my own time repairing or refinishing the things I find brings me peace of mind and time to myself to contemplate whatever has transpired in my life or time to just zone out and concentrate on the task at hand. Some items for sale or possible trade just ask..click on my profile and send me an email.

Local One of Kind Tin Wall Art by Kerry Foster

Bought this at Value Village I assume it to be one of a kind art, each piece has a small unassuming sticker on the back saying "made by Kerry Foster Toronto" I'm not sure if it was an art project or someone trying to break onto the scene but who ever this person is they've made interesting pieces here. All three can be hung individually, one has the tin pieces bent concavely while the others both have flat lying tin. Sorry about the shotty pics I really have to find a space to photograph things.

Aberfoyle Antique Market-Opening Weekend

nice set reasonably priced at $175

awesome set solid teak, thick & chunky well worth $345 though they are new

not to fond of tile inlay but the tile pattern caught my eye

impressive mostly single plank(some 2ft wide) tables of walnut, cherry, oak, 2" thick rough cut finished 2 sides. many more on other side of tent

nice set for an office just need a little leather conditioner and a light cleaning of the wood

mosaic tile coffee table

interesting lounge chairs, overpriced as many had tears in the vinyl

my personal favourite of the day is this 50s folding serving cart, was in immaculate condition but the $150 price was a little steep for me
This was the first weekend for the Aberfoyle Antique Market, I wasn't overly impressed with the permanent vendors wares but the once per week parking lot space vendors never fail to have some great stuff. These are some pics of some things I found interesting. No purchases today, this was more of a fact finding mission.

My Badass"65 Buick LeSabre

This car was one of those situations when your eyes are bigger than your mouth, and I bit off more than I could chew (more like afford). I bought this car when was around 21 I guess and I thought it was the most bad ass ride I'd ever seen. I had some understanding of automotive repair and absolutely zero fear (zero sense), it was love at first sight of that Seafoam Green. I had just worked one year for the car auction which I'm still at and when this baby rolled in I knew I had to have it, I found out which dealer brought it in and when no one bid on it I asked how much? When he said $500 I couldn't get the money out of pocket fast enough. Barely running I taped up all the spark plug wires with electrical tape as they were lighting up like a Christmas tree because they were so old and slapped a dealer plate on and drove her home in all her sans exhaust glory which ended were the Y-pipe meets the firewall, the rear brake line was pinched shut because it was blown (see told you no sense). 88kms (Mississauga-Hamilton) of screaming loud hell on wheels and unbelievably not one cop to be found. For it's age and condition this car flew with it's two speed auto tranny and I loved it. Later I spent $100 and with that I got an awesome score, Front Bumper, Rear Bumper, both exhaust manifolds and front lap belts(it had no belts when I bought). A couple years go buy and realizing I could never restore do to costs and lack of proper facilities I flipped it for exactly $600 which I had into it. Here are some pics of it and some original mag adds I still have.

OCD In Full Affect-Kathie Winkle Designs

This is the pattern I've been telling Mr Modtomic & Nickarmadillo (MCMidwest) about and now I can't get it out of my head (must be OCD). I keep referring to it wrong, It's "Broadhurst Ironstone w/designs by Kathie Winkle" this pattern is called "Rushtone" circa 1965. This image is a set that is posted on KIJIJI (Canadian classified kind of a combo of E-bay & Craigslist) it's 38pcs for $60 located in B.C. I've spotted the large platter and large bowl both in the center of this pic at a local thrift shop for $7 pair. Kathie Winkle did some floral patterns in a modern theme but it's the geometric I find appealing.....And last night I spotted 18pcs of Russel Wright Oneida China 11 dinner plates and 7 sandwich plates for around $36, they were all the same a deep brown with a lighter brown around the edge kind like a stone crock look. I didn't find it that appealing, kind of blah.

Unidentified Chair Refinish Issue-Part 3 (no more issue)

Jacobean Stain-two thumbs down

I like the green but open to ideas

So I began with these half disassembled, recovered, repainted and half stripped chairs. I stripped one down to bare wood and noticed some nasty stains in the wood; I covered them up with a Jacobean stain but hated it so I sanded down to bare wood again. In the process the oils in the Jacobean stain seemed to have pulled out whatever had stained (marked the wood). Hating the Jacobean I went darker with an Ebony stain and love it. Steps taken: 1. Disassemble and remove old finish 2. Wipe all pieces down to remove dust 3. Pretreat with Minwax wood conditioner (for even coverage of stain) 4. Two coats of Minwax stain of choice (8hrs dry time between and after last coat) 5. Three coats of Minwax Wipe On Poly (1-2hr dry time between with light sanding after first coat (I prefer very fine Emory paper) 6. not always necessary but you could very gently and very carefully wipe down with extra fine steel wool, water and pumice powder......removed blue fabric to find green vinyl in good condition, if it cleans up I'll leave but was considering a green fabric.

DeMott Sculpture - Birds Of Paradise Chalkware - Small Lava Planter - Niels Larsen School Chair - Steamer Trunk

Made off like a bandit on the DeMott Sailboat, Chalkware and Lava pot. Passed on the Niels Larsen school chair and steamer trunk. The chair was just run of the mill and smaller for a child, the steamer trunk had to much paint on it. I've got enough paint removal projects now, I also went back and checked the gravel art again but still couldn't pull the trigger on it. Overall three nice little spoils of war from my thrift store battles this evening.

Mystery Art

I've seen art like this on the web so it must have been mass produced. I took this pic at the Goodwill tonight, it was $7.99 and I didn't buy it but it has a mid century vibe to it. It's made of crushed stone or what looks like coloured aquarium gravel. Anyone know anything about it?

one of my favourite spaces

I play with this space a lot and have posted about items in it before, I'm always rearranging always adding and removing things. The desk and chair are the anchor and everything else is bait that draws me in, I do sit here to use the laptop or write so don't think it's just window dressing  The flash on the camera takes away from the actual warm feeling this space actually generates, the speakers and stereo components on the desks shelf don't help much either and they will be leaving soon. One interesting thing in these pics is the candelabra light as it seems to attract a lot of fans, if only they new this was found in a garbage pile minus the wiring and and shades. I rewired and paid $2.00 for all the shades second hand. The 1940s dress form was a score along with the curly lambs wool coat of which I have three more that I hope to sell as props. Things you can't see are on the side shelves, on them are older mason (canning, pickling) jars filled with old wooden thread bobbins and other odds and ends that were found in my grand parents collections after they passed. The novels are leather bound and are part of the Waverley novels (Ivan Hoe, Guy Mannering etc) which I will one day have looked at buy a proffesional to see if they have value or just have visual appeal which I am happy with. Everything else is just fluff and things I find interesting with exception to the girlfriends family pics. Just wanted to share.

Unidentified Chair Refinish Issue-PART 2

Well I couldn't get the stain(ink?) out of the wood so I stained the whole chair in a Jacobean finish. It masked the marks but I hate the Jacobean on this wood. I think the wood is a species of Poplar and I think this furniture was intended to be painted, why you ask? There are tongue and groove joints on the back legs that are visible when the wood is bare or has a stain finish and one of the four still has most of the paint on it that looks like it was applied in the factory. My conundrum is this, do I continue to sand out the stain as I've already begun to on the one chair I've stained and find a lighter stain alternative and also try to find another remedy to the marks(ink?) and live with the visible joint, or do I paint them (ugh!). I hate going with paint as a last resort, it seems wrong and like cheating.
tongue and groove joint + marks(ink?)
Jacobean Stain
These are some very large (5yds up to 10yds) and what would otherwise be expensive pieces of upholstery fabric if I'd bought at a fabric store but I found these at Value Village for no more than $7.00 each for the whole piece, I'd like to use one of these on the chairs. The one in the middle with the diamond pattern I like and the blue faux suede at the bottom but what colour to paint the chairs if I go that route. I was thinking paint them black and paint the the back rest either the lime green or orange that appeared early in my blog and also pictured at bottom here but then these fabrics wouldn't work and I'd have find something else.

Unidentified Chair Refinish Issue

I really want to get going on my Krug table and chair set but it's gong to require all my attention and dedication so I started on my unidentified chairs from a couple posts back. I dismantled and sanded one last night, so far so good and all the paint is off the visible areas but there are some troubling stains that might be ink but I cannot be certain. I haven't tried yet but I heard a baking soda paste rubbed on lightly and then a washed off with Murphy's  might fade it. I also heard rubbing alcohol may work. I would like to keep the blonde colour but if I cannot get the stains out then I may be forced to use a Jacobean or other dark stain to mask whatever it is. Anyone else have any bright ideas?
